October 10, 2025.  Clifton Court/Banks Commons, Frankfort and State St.
After many years of planning, fundraising, and construction, the project is complete.  There are over 4,000 colorful handmade ceramic tiles in a mosaic design depicting animals, flowers, and scenes of neighborhood landmarks.  Some of the images in the project include Native Americans row in a canoe on Beargrass Creek, buffalo grazing in a field, a wooden bridge over Beargrass Creek, a farmer on a horse drawn wagon taking pigs to the Butchertown market, residents walking on brick sidewalks, Colonel Joshua Bowles estate, Hilltop Theater, Albert A. Stoll Firehouse, a horse hitched to a wagon loaded with barrels and drinking from the horse trough, Kentucky School for the Blind Costigan Building, Colored School for the Blind, American Printing House for the Blind, Bingham Park, St Frances of Rome Church/Clifton Center, Widman’s Salon/Irish Rover, Chicken Steps, Fort Elstner, Billy Goat Hill, the Easter Parade, a train and the railroad tracks, a trolley, and more.
The vision for this project began with Lead Artist Liz Richter in 2020, and she was assisted by Ceramicist Kristen Falkirk, and disability inclusion specialist, Darren Harbour.  In 2022, Louisville Visual Art and  the Kentucky School for the Blind Charitable Foundation worked on the design for the installation which also includes audio description, braille signage, and supplementary online content.
Thanks to the many community stakeholders, including the American Printing House for the Blind, the Clifton Community Council, GBBN Architects, and New Directions Housing Corporation, who have provided key material and in-kind support to supplement funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, South Arts, Metro External Agency Funds & Neighborhood Development Funds, and Louisville Fund for the Arts, among others.
