Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: Does my home need to be inspected again? Someone already evaluated my home.
An insurance adjuster (Crawford & Co.) assessed your hoe damage from an insurance perspective. If you choose to participate in the Community Repair Program (through GRS), your home will be assessed by a structural engineer and a general contractor to determine the repairs that are needed and those repairs will be made.
Q2. Can those who have already started the Crawford process use the Community Repair Program (through GRS) process?
You may choose to participate in the Community Repair Program through GRS instead of working with Crawford. Please contact GRS using the contact information provided.
Q3. Is Givaudan willing to offer GRS’s licensed structural assessments to those who have already had repairs completed? If so, how would Givaudan handled that?
This is dependent on whether or not the homeowner has already had a structural engineer do an assessment and complete repairs. Each individual situation will be discussed directly with the homeowner.
Q4. If a homeowner goes through their own insurance or makes the repairs themselves, is there a limit to the reimbursement amount?
Homeowners are eligible for the costs to bring their home into pre-accident condition or the re-accident market value of their property.
Q5. Is there a specific zone around the blast site that qualifies for the home repair program?
No, but the damage must have been caused by the accident.
Q6. What happens next? What should we expect?
In the coming days you will begin to see GRS assessors in the neighborhood conducting home assessments. They will be clearly identified.
Q7. Can I speak with both GRS and Crawford?
You are welcome to speak with both of them to better understand their process, offering and to inform your decision for getting repairs done.
Q8. Why are you making this change now?
Givaudan remains committed to the community and helping individuals impacted by the accident in November. We have heard the community’s request for additional resources to repair damages and have secured GRS as an additional supplemental home repair option.
Q9. I’ve already received a settlement for damages – can I still participate in the Community Repair Program?
If you have already received a settlement, you are not eligible for the CRP program.
Q10. If I have retained counsel, can I participate in the Community Repair Program?
Yes you can participate in the CRP. Please have your attorney contact [email protected] to move forward.

Givaudan hires response team to make home repairs
By Quenton Robertson, Published: Mar. 6, 2025 at 9:11 PM EST
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Givaudan is making more home repair options available to people who had their property damaged by its factory explosion in November.
Officials from the company said they have hired Gilbane Reconstruction Services, also called GRS Disaster Response, to answer home repair requests.
According to a release, members of the response team will assess the property, make repairs and create a final structural safety report.
Several homes along Payne Street were damaged by debris from the blast.
Officials said that in the coming weeks, GRS will visit the community to connect with homeowners to inform them about the repair program. The response team will also assess the property to identify repair work, begin home repairs and provide a final report to assess the structural safety of any repairs made.
Now, homeowners whose properties were impacted have three options to have repairs completed:

Metro Councilman Andrew Owen posted the US Chemical Safety Board report today
Read the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board update online here:
http://www.csb.gov/.../givaudan_investigation_update...
Last week, the U. S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) released an update on the ongoing investigation into the tragic explosion at the Givaudan facility in the Clifton neighborhood. The update confirms the findings from preliminary investigations, revealing that a relief valve malfunctioned on one of the caramel coloring cooking vessels. This malfunction caused a dangerous buildup of pressure that let to the catastrophic explosion inside the factory. For those seeking more details, the full investigation update is available on the District 9 website at www.louisville.gov/district9.

Givaudan and Crawford & Co Insurance will be at UCHM, 150 State St. on Wed., February 12, 4-6 pm. This is a time for you to personally talk with Givaudan or Crawford representatives about your concerns.
Message from Givaudan:
Over the coming weeks, there will continue to be clean-up work at the Givaudan plant site including the removal of materials and ingredients. Working in collaboration with the KY EPA and other relevant regulatory authorities, a thorough protocol for material/ingredient removal has been established. The process includes the removal of any ingredients that are able to be used in making colors as listed by the FDA, though not all of these may be on site.
A reputable company, experts in material removal, will manage the process. As there will be an increase in truck traffic to and from the site in this first phase, the driveway from Payne Street will be blocked off from Feb 12-26 when not impacted by weather. We know there is great interest from the media and others, but for your safety, we ask that you not cross the barriers or get in the way of the process and traffic. As some of the clean-up/removal steps involved are weather sensitive, to ensure safe operations, times and dates may be changed or finalized with short notice.
Please keep an eye on updates from Councilman Owen and the Clifton Community Council for details as they become available.

Givaudan – Community Update
January 24, 2025
Heavy equipment is removing some cinder block wall on the rail line side of the plant to prevent any type of collapse onto storage tanks or onto the rail line. There is a big excavator doing the work. It will last today (Friday 01/24), some of tomorrow (Saturday 01/25) and possibly a bit of Monday (01/27). It is due to safety concerns and de-risking the site with all these visitors coming in February to complete the investigation. It will only happen during the day.
Next week will be cleanup efforts once this demo project is complete. Demo will be happening as the plant gets dismantled. Unfortunately, the noise will come along with the demo that will take place during normal business hours. Nights should be quiet. Givaudan is not going to build on that site, this means the whole plant will be demolished. Givaudan asks for patience as the noise will continue with each phase.
Representatives from Givaudan and Crawford & Co Insurance are scheduled at United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM) , 150 State St on Wednesday, February 12, 4 – 6 pm. This is a time for you to personally talk with Givaudan or Crawford representatives about your concerns.

- Homeowners’ Insurance – Many homeowners have chosen to work with their own home insurance provider and contractors for their home repairs, and this option continues to be available. Your insurance company will then submit a claim for reimbursement to Crawford & Co.
- Homeowner-Managed (through Crawford & Co) – Other homeowners have chosen to hire their own contractors or do the repairs themselves without involving their home insurance provider, and, again, this option continues to be available. You may submit your claim for reimbursement directly to Crawford & Co.
- Community Repair Program (CRP) (through GRS)- GRS will assess your property damage and directly handle the repairs. In addition, GRS will provide a certification to participating homeowners that their property is structurally safe at the conclusion of the work at no additional cost to the homeowner.

Givaudan - Community Update
January 21, 2025
Site activities: Investigations and demolition
- Investigations at the site will continue for the coming weeks and potentially months. The primary investigation right now is being conducted by the Chemical Safety Board (CSB), a Federal Agency. They have been on site regularly since November. We don’t have visibility of their timeline for either completion of their investigation or publishing of their findings.
- Other authorities involved include KY OSHA who is conducting an investigation and who is on-site regularly, and the KY EPA who has been on site numerous times, assessing and approving protocols.
- The ATF completed and reported on their investigation in November.
- At the end of January, you will see increased activity at the site as we prepare for many visitors during the first two weeks of February.
- In early February, the attorneys and engineers of any company on notice (for example the manufacturers of equipment that was used at the site) will have an opportunity to visit and investigate. We expect representatives from approximately 30 companies during this time.
- As was the case in December, in February, we may have to block the Payne Street driveway at times. We will send advance notification if this is necessary and will work to minimize any disruption.
- We know there is great interest from the media and others, but for your safety, we ask that you not cross the barriers or get in the way of the process and traffic.
- Once the on-site portions of the investigations are complete, we will begin to transition to demolition work. We expect that this will continue well into the spring and will keep you apprised of progress.
Insurance:
- Since November, Crawford & Co Insurance teams have been in the Clifton neighborhood conducting damage assessments. Most of the properties that have been reported have been assessed for damage.
- Crawford & Co is now working on the process for issuing payments that can be used for repairs – we anticipate this to begin in February.
- Some homeowners have chosen to have their own insurance companies do assessments and have moved forward with repairs. The deductible cost for validated repairs will be reimbursed by Givaudan and the insurance companies then work in the background to resolve the claim.
- Givaudan remains committed to assuring that residents in the neighborhood are reimbursed for damage that was a result of the incident.
Future plans:
- We know that the community has many questions and concerns about the site and the rebuilding of our facility.
- Givaudan will not be rebuilding on the Payne Street site
- We are considering different options for a future facility, both in KY and in neighboring states.
- As we are still in the early stages of this process, and nothing definitive has been determined, we don’t yet have more detail about location or timing.
- We will continue to provide updates as we progress with this process
Communication:
- Givaudan representatives, often accompanied by Crawford & Co insurance representatives, have been available at the United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM) to answer questions.
- The last scheduled Community Desk at UCHM is Wednesday, January 22nd,4-6 pm. We are tentatively scheduling another session on Wednesday, February 12th based on community interest. This date will be confirmed well in advance.
- To contact Givaudan concerning reimbursement requests or general questions:
Email: [email protected]
- If you have not yet completed a claim form, please log the details of your claim and your communication at www.ddwcolor.com/community-support/
- To contact Crawford & Co requesting an estimated date for property assessments, repair follow up, insurance related questions, etc.
Email claims and request information from Crawford & Co at [email protected]
We will continue to provide updates as each of these areas progress. We understand the difficulty and complexity this situation has caused, and we remain committed to ensuring that the community is supported as needed to return to its previous vibrancy.

2. We have UPDATED the channels of communication for Givaudan directly and for Crawford & Co, Givaudan’s insurer going forward – please note:
Please do NOT call 800-856-3333 – the number shared in prior communication. This number has reverted to a general customer service line and is no longer linked to Givaudan or our insurer.
To engage directly with a direct representative of Givaudan for matters concerning reimbursement requests or general questions:
- Call or text this local number: 502-341-2903
- Someone will either answer directly or will return your call or text within 2 business days

- If you have not yet completed a claim form, please log the details of your claim and your communication www.ddwcolor.com/community-support/
To engage with Crawford & Co for matters such requesting an estimated date for property assessments, repair follow up, insurance related questions, etc.
- Call 404-913-1949
- The direct email to send claims to and request information from Crawford & Co is [email protected]
3. Four teams from Crawford Insurance are in the area assessing damages to set up the repair process – last week 30-40 homes were assessed, and teams are back on the ground this week.
- Crawford operating with a priority on the most damaged properties first – primarily 100 block of Haldeman, Weist, and 1800-1900 blocks of Payne St. Other properties may have longer wait times to be assessed.
- While it is not required, the most direct (and fastest) path to have your property damages assessed and repaired will be to report to your own insurance and have Givaudan reimburse you for your deductible upon completion of the repairs. The insurance companies can work in the background to resolve the claim.
- Team leaders for Crawford will be calling and/or emailing residents to set up appointments according to the prioritization above. Their phone numbers will be from area codes outside of Louisville, so please be on the lookout for these calls and listen to voice mails frequently.
4. JARL Security is monitoring the plant and the neighboring houses 24/7 to support LMPD efforts.
5. Givaudan completed the 1st pass of debris clean up from residents' yards a few weeks ago. A 2nd debris clean-up from resident yards is underway starting tomorrow. There will be both representatives from ICG and a few Givaudan team members in the area – we have received permission from a few more property owners and will address a few more of the public spaces. If you have additional debris and would like us to arrange pick up, please use the phone number or email for Givaudan given above.
6. Givaudan will be continuing clean-up work at the plant site. We ask for your patience as some of the steps are weather sensitive to ensure safe operations, so times and dates may be finalized with relatively short notice. Feel free to call the Givaudan number above with questions and keep an eye on updates from Councilman Owen and the Clifton Community Council for details as they become available.

Message from Landmarks staff: The Urban Design team in the Office of Planning, who are staff to the Metro Historic Landmarks & Preservation Districts Commission, are here to help those affected by the explosion on Payne Street. Please contact our team to find out if the damage sustained to your property will require a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA). This is the free application that is used for all exterior changes to properties located in a local preservation district such as Clifton and Butchertown. Though the COA process will remain the same, the typical timeline will not. Our team will prioritize and expedite the review of applications for properties that were affected by the explosion.
- 1. Please call and speak to an Urban Design team member to find out if the repairs needed to your property will require a COA. We can be reached at 502-574-6230 or you can email here https://louisvilleky.wufoo.com/forms/z43se1707jpvso/
- If a COA is needed, then fill out an application. This can be done online via Accela (https://aca-louisville.accela.com/ljcmg/Default.aspx) or by filling out the PDF version. If you are using the PDF version, please fill out the first two pages. Only the pertinent information is necessary to get started: address of the property, detailed description of the work, pictures of the current condition, point of contact’s contact information, and signature of the property owner. Anything else can be gathered by our team once the signed application has been submitted. COA applications can be submitted in our office (444 S. 5th Street, 3rd floor) or via email to [email protected]. If you email an application, bear in mind we can only accept 10mb or less, so you may have to send multiple emails. See Certificate of Appropriateness application below.
- Once the signed application has been submitted, it will immediately be processed for intake and assigned to a case manager. That case manager will reach out to explain the process moving forward. We will do our best to expedite the review and issuance of all COAs that are submitted in response to damage due to the explosion.
- Once the COA has been reviewed and approved, your case manager will email you the completed COA with conditions of approval. Please share with your contractor, so they understand how the work needs to be completed.
