Two Fall Tree Planting Opportunities - deadline July 31, 2026
Clifton, Let’s Talk Trees

Summer is here, and I’m sure you’ve felt it: the heat radiating off the pavement, those stretches of blocks with hardly any shade, and then, that immediate, almost surprising relief when you step under the canopy of a big, healthy tree. To me, there are few things that make the importance of trees more obvious than that moment.
Trees cool our streets, but they also make it more enjoyable and safer to walk, improve air quality, and contribute our neighborhood feeling even more welcoming and livable. But right now, Clifton’s tree canopy sits at only 29%, far below Metro’s goal of 45%.
Thanks to Metro Urban Forestry's Louisville Equitable Forest Initiative (LEFI - yes, like "leafy"!), a program funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, we have an opportunity to change that.
Through the LEFI program, if you live in an eligible area of Clifton, (south of Frankfort Ave. or south of the railroad tracks) you can request a tree to be planted for free in the public right-of-way in front of your home (if you’re a renter, you’ll just need your property owner’s approval). Submit a request before July 31, and it’ll go in the ground this coming winter. Even better, watering, pruning, and maintenance are included for the first three years.
Urban Forestry’s certified arborists inspect every site to ensure plantability, avoid utility conflicts and make sure the right species get planted in the right place.

Want a tree but don’t have street space, or live outside of a LEFI-eligible area?
Plant a yard tree through TreesLouisville’s residential tree program!
With funding support from Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District, nonprofit organization TreesLouisville is offering trees to Clifton residents for a donation of just $30 per tree, which includes professional planting, staking, mulching and a water well (a value of over $200). Tree recipients are responsible for watering and future care.
Choose from one of the following yard trees (the larger the tree, the greater the benefits!):
Large Trees (50ft+ at maturity) Mid-Size Trees (30-50ft) Small Trees (up to 30ft)
Willow Oak Blackgum (Black Tupelo) Pawpaw
‘Autumn Gold’ Ginkgo Yellowwood Eastern Redbud
If you need assistance with species selection, TreesLouisville will provide guidance on choosing the right tree for your property.
Please note: only a limited number of trees will be available per species – register early to secure your top choice!
